The only thing we have to fear is... DEAR GOD! What's that!?!?

Childhood fears. We all have/had them. What's yours?

Me, I'm almost afraid of the dark. I say almost because I don't have a problem with being in a dark room. Got over that a couple of decades ago. I rather like a deal of shade, day or night. What I don't like is having the next room over being dark. Something about that yawning black portal gives me the absolute willies. The room I'm in, I figure I would know if there was some ravening beast looming over my shoulder. But over there? No telling what's lurking about in there. Best not to think about it too hard. It might just encourage them.

Closets are, perhaps, even worse. But I blame that on the movies I watched as a kid. "Poltergeist" just isn't something to be exposed to if you're under 5. 'Course, if that wasn't enough, there was this movie titled, appropriately enough, "The Monster in the Closet". Two guesses what it was about. Thinking about it, the fear of closets and the things that come out of them is common enough to have become a cliche. Really makes you wonder where that came from. Couldn't be anything to it, right?

...

Excuse me. I have some lights to turn on.

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary."
